Originating in the Netherlands a century ago when it was developed at Kasteel Twickel (Twickel Castle), itself lying in the middle of a 4,000 hectare estate near Delden, Twickle Purple is a vigorous lavender with impressive long flower spikes. Its mass of mauve flowers appear from June to July and are highly fragrant – ideal for pot pourri – and offer a delightful contrast to its lush, compact green-grey foliage noted for its long leaves. Twickle Purple is a cook’s favourite as well and flowers and leaves can be added sparingly to stews, soups and salads.
It loves full sun and, of course, a well-drained soil and its compact, bushy foliage make it ideal for edging and low, border hedges. It also makes an excellent specimen plant for a tub, bed or rockery.
