Photinia Red Robin (Photinia x fraseri ‘Red Robin’) is one of the most striking of all hedging plants.
Photinias are members of the rose family (Rosaceae) andare related to the apple. Native to North America and Asia, Photinia x fraseri ‘Red Robin’ is the fashionable choice for those looking for vibrant and striking colour in their hedge. Photinia Red Robin makes a statement in any garden, but it never, ever shouts. The new growth of this Photinia is a strong, deep red – vibrant but not garish – which then slowly matures to a shiny dark green. The plant’s name comes from photeinos, the Greek for glossy.
Over the last 20 years, this popular hedging plant has established itself right across the world as the most popular of all Photinias – but don’t let this put you off. Plants only become that well-loved if they look good, grow well and have a proven track record. After all, the RHS has given Photinia Red Robin their Award of Garden Merit.
Photinia Red Robin makes a splendid hedge – planted at 55cm intervals – but will be equally willing to add its unique splash of colour if planted in a container or as a specimen shrub.

To achieve a thick garden hedge, you must trim early but the final height is easily managed. The more this hedging plant is cut, the more the vibrant red shoots appear.
Please note: Clones of this hedging plant are available but we are not yet convinced of their viability or suitability and have therefore decided to wait for the results of further tests and trials before we consider adding them to our list.
