What are the Best Hedging Plants for: Growing in Poor, Unfertile Soil?

Hedging plants (with the exception of Hornbeam (it likes wet feet|) and Cherry Laurel (it doesn’t like a low pH) really aren’t that fussy when it comes to soil providing it is well-draining.

And certainly, if this main requirement is met, the addition of some organic matter and/or general fertiliser will compensate for truly impoverished soil. This is particularly important if you are growing Photinia Red Robin (Photinia x fraseri ‘Red Robin’) as it will not thrive in poor soil.

There is one hedging plant, however, that actually needs poor soil – the truly stunning Perovskia Blue Spire AGM (Perovskia atriplicifolia ‘Blue Spire’).
