Amelanchier × lamarckii — also known as juneberry, serviceberry or shadbush — is a large deciduous shrub or small tree of open, airy habit, and one of the best all-round garden trees of its size.
It starts the year with bronze-tinged young leaves and short, lax racemes of white flowers that open as the foliage unfurls, so the whole tree seems to froth into life at once. Edible red berries follow, ripening to dark purple-black — birds tend to find them before you do. In autumn the leaves turn orange and red.
Grown as a multi-stem it keeps that open, natural shape, which is why it works equally well as a standalone feature in a courtyard, as part of an informal screen, or in a wildlife planting. It asks very little once established.
