Beech is a staple of English gardens for good reason, and clipped into a ball it gives you sophistication and natural charm at the same time. It is as comfortable in a formal scheme as it is in a softer, more relaxed one.
What makes beech particularly special as topiary is what it does in winter. It is technically deciduous, but it is usually classed as semi-evergreen because it holds on to its crisp, coppery-brown leaves right through the cold months. Then in May, fresh lime-green foliage pushes the old leaves off — a proper seasonal shift, without ever losing the shape.
They are worth playing with. Pair different sizes for contrast, or surround them with grasses and perennials to soften the outline and blend formal with informal. They sit well in courtyard gardens, flower borders, along driveways, and even beside a swimming pool.
Hardy and low maintenance. Give it full sun to partial shade and free-draining soil; it is happy in exposed or sheltered positions and will take temperatures down to around −20°C.
