About Berberis Darwinii

Berberis darwinii is one of the best evergreen hedging shrubs — dense, arching growth clothed in small, glossy dark-green leaves with tiny spines, forming a hedge of about 1–2m and putting on roughly 30–40cm a year.

In spring it disappears beneath a mass of vivid orange-yellow flowers, followed in autumn by blue-black berries that birds strip quickly. The spiny growth makes it an excellent intruder-deterrent and stock-proof boundary.

It is tough and unfussy, tolerating sun or partial shade and most reasonably drained soils, including exposed and coastal sites. Trim after flowering to keep it dense — cutting earlier removes the flower buds.
