A robust, evergreen perennial forming clumps of large, glossy, leathery leaves — rich green through the growing season, taking on deep purple-bronze tints as temperatures drop.
In early spring it sends up sturdy stems carrying clusters of vivid magenta-pink flowers, a welcome splash of colour after winter.
It is remarkably easy: happy in sun or partial shade, tolerant of clay and sandy soils alike, drought-tolerant once established, and generally left alone by deer and rabbits. Excellent weed-suppressing ground cover for borders, pathways and woodland gardens.
