‘Doorenbos’ is among the most dramatic of the white-stemmed birches. Its almost ethereal bark peels away to show a pale orange beneath, and — a quirk worth knowing — it can be very gently scrubbed to restore that brilliant white when it dulls.
In habit it is more formal, sturdier and more upright than the native silver birch, with dark green leaves that turn golden in autumn. It is hardy and shallow-rooting.
It is delightful on its own, but genuinely striking planted in groups, and best of all against a dark background — a house wall, or a dark green hedge behind will make the white stems glow. Grown as a multi-stem you get that effect several times over from a single plant.
