Campsis radicans, the trumpet vine, is the climber to plant when you want impact rather than subtlety. It is fast-growing and deciduous, with handsome pinnate foliage that gives it an architectural look even before it flowers, and it will cover a bare wall, a pergola or an ugly outbuilding in a few seasons.
The flowers are the point. From mid-July through into early autumn it carries clusters of big trumpet-shaped blooms — up to 8cm long — in fiery orange, deep coral and red. They are a magnet for bees and butterflies, so it earns its place in a wildlife garden as well as a decorative one.
It is easy-going about position: full sun or partial sun, and any aspect, though the warmest, sunniest spot you can give it will produce the best flowering. Any soil will do provided it drains freely. Give it a solid support to climb — it is vigorous and gets weighty — and prune hard in late winter to keep it in bounds and encourage strong flowering wood.
