If you are after a small fragrant flowering evergreen shrub, Choisya ‘Aztec Pearl’, is a firm favourite. The clusters of sweetly scented, starry white flowers, are surrounded by whorls of slender aromatic glossy green leaves.
Native to Mexico and south west America, Choisya x dewitteana ‘Aztec Pearl’ loves the sun, and will form an elegant, neat and rounded bush. This small evergreen shrub is fully hardy, and may reach to 2.5m wide and 2.5m tall in maturity.
The flowers are arranged in attractive clusters, and have a wonderful almond scent. Tinted pink when in bud, the flowers open to white in spring, with a beautiful rosy flush on the back of the petals. Free-flowering, Choisya ‘Aztec Pearl’ will first flower in spring, and, if the weather is hot, it will often flower again in late summer, for a second flush of gorgeous blooms.
The distinctive slender bright green, opposite leaves are highly aromatic when crushed, and are an attractive foliage addition to any garden, year round.
Choisya is pollinated by bees, and is therefore a superb choice if you are looking to add a wildlife friendly plant to your garden.
Choisya ‘Aztec Pearl’ prefers full-sun, fertile, well-drained soil and ideally a sheltered position. It will do ok in partial shade, but may not flower as profusely. In northern gardens it is worth giving it extra protection, and planting it against a south or west-facing wall.
There is no need to prune Choisya ‘Aztec Pearl’ and it is frost resistant, making it a fairly easy-going evergreen shrub, that will produce an abundance of fragrant white flowers each summer.
