If you are after a compact fragrant flowering evergreen shrub Choisya × dewitteana White Dazzler, is a firm favourite. The clusters of sweetly scented, starry white flowers, are surrounded by whorls of slender aromatic glossy green leaves.
Native to Mexico and south west America, Mexican orange blossom, as it is often referred to, loves the sun, and will form an elegant, neat and rounded bush. This compact evergreen shrub is fully hardy, and will reach to 1m wide and 1m tall in maturity.
The flowers are arranged in attractive clusters, have a wonderful almond scent, and open to snow-white in late spring. Free-flowering, Choisya ‘White Dazzler’ will often flower again in late summer and autumn if the weather is hot, for a second flush of gorgeous blooms.
The distinctive slender dark green, opposite leaves are highly aromatic when crushed, and are an attractive foliage addition to any garden, year round.
Choisya is pollinated by bees, and is therefore a superb choice if you are looking to add a wildlife friendly plant to your garden.
Choisya ‘White Dazzler’ prefers full-sun, fertile, well-drained soil and ideally a sheltered position. It will do ok in partial shade, but may not flower as profusely. In northern gardens it is worth giving it extra protection and planting it against a south or west-facing wall.
It works well in pots and in borders, is a great addition to city garden or a courtyard. Choisya is also very happy by the sea, and is a works well in a coastal location.
Prune immediately after flowering in spring, to encourage a second flush of flowers the same season.
