Description
Firethorn-Pyracantha Saphyr Rouge is a very hardy plant and can survive very hard cutbacks. Ideally, this should be done lightly in spring and then again at autumn. This is so the new growth does not obscure the ripening red berries which is great for the local wildlife, attracting a vast variety of bird species. Furthermore, the white flower’s nectar is amazing for the Bees suppling a great source of food. Pyracantha can grow up to 4m in height and is capable of spreading over 1m in width. Ideally, it should be planted in free draining, moderately fertile soil. It can also grow in full or partial sun though with less sun you will get less berries. Saphyr Rouge is fast growing, reaching up to 50cm a year in optimum growing conditions.
Usually Firethorn-Pyracantha Saphyr Rouge is trained along an existing trellis or wall, however it is capable of forming a loose, thorny, intruder proof hedge but this would require plenty of pruning to keep it tight and supported.
Another interesting fact is that this Pyracantha has been bred so it is less susceptible to disease.
