Hazel (Corylus avellana) is one of the great British natives and a mainstay of traditional mixed country hedging. Broad, soft, rounded leaves give dense summer cover and turn a warm butter-yellow in autumn.
In late winter it carries long yellow catkins — one of the first signs the year is turning — followed by clusters of hazelnuts in autumn, if the squirrels leave you any. It is superb for wildlife, supporting insects, birds and small mammals.
It grows quickly and responds well to hard cutting, which is why it has been coppiced and laid in hedgerows for centuries. Happy in sun or partial shade on almost any soil that is not waterlogged.
