‘Nellie R. Stevens’ is a superb hybrid holly, faster and more vigorous than common holly, with large, lustrous dark-green leaves that hold their shine right through winter.
It forms a naturally dense, well-furnished habit, which is what makes it such a reliable screen — it does not go thin and bare at the base the way many evergreens do. Given a pollinator nearby it also carries a good crop of red berries.
It is tolerant and easy: happy in full sun or partial shade, on most well-drained soils, and copes with clipping well, so it can be kept to a formal outline or allowed to fill out.
