An easy, evergreen perennial with glossy, sword-shaped leaves that stay handsome all year. Discreet, subtly veined flowers appear in early summer, but the real show comes later.
In autumn the seed-pods split to reveal rows of vivid orange berries that persist well into winter, lighting up shady corners when little else does.
One of the best plants for dry shade, it thrives almost anywhere — sun or deep shade, most soils — and needs virtually no care. (The name refers only to the faint scent of crushed leaves.)
