About Lavender Grosso

Description

Lavender ‘Grosso’ (Lavandula intermedia ‘Grosso’) is an evergreen, scented shrub reaching up to 1m wide and tall within 2-5 years from seed or cutting. It has light blue/violet flowers which form on spikes. It is essential any lavender is positioned in full sun as they do not tolerate shade well at all. There are many misconceptions about lavender; one of which is   that it hates water. I can assure you that this is not the case, however it just does not like sitting in it and therefore free draining soil is essential. If you do not have free draining soil you can always improve it by adding compost around it and planting it proud.

Lavender ‘Grosso’ (Lavandula intermedia ‘Grosso’) is what is known as an intermedia variety. This is a cross between lavender latifolia (a broader leafed lavender) and lavender angustifolia   (Narrow leaf   or English Lavender in this case). This means it flowers slightly later, sometimes into the Autumn.

Typically the intermedia varieties such as the Lavender ‘Grosso’ (Lavandula intermedia ‘Grosso’) are larger, more robust and have a longer flowering period than Lavender angustifolia (English lavender) varieties. With all Lavenders if you remove their flower heads slightly early you can encourage a second flush of flowers.

Lavender ‘Grosso’ (Lavandula intermedia ‘Grosso’) is known to have many benefits for the wildlife, for instance being rich in sector and pollen it is great for attracting bees, butterflies, moths and other pollinators. It has no reported toxicity to birds and livestock, however it is poisonous to horses.

Lavender Grosso (Lavandula intermedia ‘Grosso’) goes extremely well in a mediterranean themed garden or a classic English one. They can be planted in beds, usually towards the middle or the front or they are capable of forming a low/dwarf garden hedge and is excellent at flanking a gravel path. It is also a perfect container plant and is well suited to city and courtyard gardens, cottage and informal gardens

Lavender ‘Grosso’ (Lavandula intermedia ‘Grosso’) is typically used in the production of lavender oil and once established it is incredibly resistant to drought.

We offer Lavender ‘Grosso’ (Lavandula intermedia ‘Grosso’) in a variety of sizes, including a large 10L pot. This size lavender is rarely available to the public.
