Ligustrum lucidum ‘Superbum’ is a handsome broadleaf evergreen privet, trained here as a pleached screen: a flat, formal head of foliage on a clear stem, giving you privacy above fence height without the footprint of a full tree.
The leaves are large, leathery and glossy, brightly variegated with creamy-yellow margins that lift a shaded boundary. It is quick to establish and holds its foliage through winter.
Privet is famously tolerant — it copes with most soils, sun or partial shade, and urban conditions — which makes this one of the easiest pleached screens to keep looking good. Trim the frame once or twice a year to hold the shape.
