Liquid Ambar (Liquidambar styraciflua, sweet gum) is one of the finest autumn-colour trees you can plant. Its glossy, star-shaped leaves look superficially like a maple, but the autumn display is longer and far more varied — the same tree can carry yellow, orange, scarlet and deep purple at once.
It forms a neat, conical shape when young, broadening with age, and the corky, fissured bark gives winter interest. As a single specimen in a lawn it is hard to beat.
Best colour comes in full sun on neutral to slightly acid soil that does not dry out; it colours less reliably on shallow chalk. Give it space — this is a tree that earns a prominent position.
