Magnolia kobus bears masses of fragrant, white star-shaped flowers on bare branches in early spring, before the leaves appear.

Magnolia kobus is one of the most reliable and hardy magnolias — an elegant, spreading tree that flowers on bare wood in early spring, so the display is completely unobstructed by foliage.
The flowers are pure white, lightly fragrant and star-shaped, opening from silky buds that are themselves attractive through winter. Fresh green leaves follow once flowering finishes.
It is more tolerant than many magnolias, coping with a range of soils including some alkalinity, though it prefers moist, well-drained ground. Choose a spot sheltered from early-morning sun, which can brown the flowers after a frost.
