‘Evereste’ is a small tree with a neat pyramidal crown that broadens as it matures. The branches spread wide and take on a gently pendulous habit with age, and the twigs and bark are smooth and dark brown. Grown as a multi-stem rather than on a single trunk, it has a relaxed, natural shape that suits an informal garden and works as a standalone feature.
The blossom is the first act. Flowers up to around 6cm are carried in bundles of four to eight; in bud they are a deep purplish-pink, opening to bright white, so a tree in full flower shows both colours at once. The slightly lobed dark green leaves hold on the tree well into autumn before turning yellowish-orange.
Then the fruit. ‘Evereste’ crops abundantly, with orange-red to red crab apples up to 2.5cm across that stay on the branches long into winter — good for the birds, and a real feature when everything else has finished. It is also widely reckoned to be the best crab apple of the lot for making jelly.
It is easy to place: full sun or partial sun, any aspect, and any soil that drains freely.
