Ornamental Cherry ‘Nigra’ carries deep purple-black foliage all season, opening with a haze of soft pink blossom in spring.
Sold in several sizes — tell us what you need and we’ll confirm price and availability.
Prunus cerasifera ‘Nigra’ (black cherry plum) is grown for its foliage as much as its flowers. The leaves emerge a rich ruby-red and deepen to near-black purple, holding that colour right through summer when many purple-leaved trees fade.
In early spring, before the leaves appear, the bare branches are covered in small single flowers of pale pink — a beautiful contrast, and one of the earliest blossoms of the year. Small dark fruits sometimes follow in warm summers.
It stays a manageable size, which makes it one of the most useful specimen trees for an ordinary garden, and it is undemanding — full sun for the best leaf colour, in any reasonable well-drained soil.
