Osmanthus × burkwoodii gives you year-round structure with a bit of seasonal charm on top. The deep green evergreen foliage stays neat and tidy, and then in spring it surprises you with clusters of highly scented white flowers. In a good year you may also get small black fruits in autumn.
Topiary is not only for formal gardens. Group different sizes together for contrast, or soften the whole thing by pairing them with swaying grasses and colourful perennials. They work well in courtyard gardens, flower borders, along driveways, and even poolside where you want a hint of structured greenery.
Happy in full sun to partial shade. It wants free-draining soil and copes with both sheltered and exposed positions, and it is tough enough to take temperatures down to around −15°C.
