Phormium ‘Golden Ray’ is a stunning New Zealand Flax (Phormium) variety grown at our Oxfordshire nursery that is sure to add a unique and eye-catching touch to any garden. This evergreen shrub is known for its striking yellow-green foliage that is variegated with creamy yellow stripes and a green centre. The foliage is upright and arching, reaching up to 1.5m in height and width. The foliage is also quite stiff and leathery, making it an excellent choice for windy areas.

In the summer months, Phormium ‘Golden Ray’ (New Zealand Flax) produces tall yellow flower spikes in the summer when they mature. These flowers are quite attractive and are a great source of nectar for bees and other pollinators.

Phormium ‘Golden Ray’ (New Zealand Flax) is quite hardy and can tolerate a wide range of soil types and conditions providing it is well drained. It is also quite drought tolerant once established. It is best grown in full sun to partial shade and can tolerate salt winds making it a perfect choice for a seaside or costal garden, pairing well with Euporbias in rocky gardens. It also matches well with other species from New Zealand inclining Griselinia littoralis; Griselinia littoralis variegata; Euonymus  and Pittosporums.
