Phormium ‘Rainbow Queen’ otherwise known as Phormium ‘Maori Queen’ is a stunning New Zealand Flax (Phormium) variety grown at our Oxfordshire nursery that is sure to add a unique and eye-catching touch to any garden. This evergreen shrub is known for its deep pink centre and purple edged leaves.
The foliage is upright and arching, reaching up to 1m in height and 1.5m in width. The foliage is also quite stiff and leathery, making it an excellent choice for windy areas.
In the summer months, Phormium ‘Rainbow Queen'(New Zealand Flax) produces tall purple flower spikes in the summer when they mature. These flowers are quite attractive and are a great source of nectar for bees and other pollinators.
Phormium ‘Rainbow Queen’ (New Zealand Flax) is quite hardy and can tolerate a wide range of soil types and conditions providing it is well drained. It is also quite drought tolerant once established. It is best grown in full sun to partial shade and can tolerate salt winds making it a perfect choice for a seaside or costal garden, pairing well with Euporbias in rocky gardens. It also matches well with other species from New Zealand inclining Griselinia littoralis; Griselinia littoralis variegata; Euonymus and Pittosporums.
Phormium ‘Rainbow Queen’ (New Zealand Flax) is an excellent choice for adding texture and dramatic colour to your garden. It is also a great choice for creating a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant garden.
