Pleached Photinia 'Red Robin' showing red new growth, trained on a bamboo frame

Photinia 'Red Robin'

Photinia × fraseri 'Red Robin'

Photinia 'Red Robin' trained as a tree rather than a hedge. Every flush of new growth opens brilliant scarlet before deepening to glossy green, so a clipped plant colours up again each time it is cut.

About Photinia 'Red Robin' trees

Photinia × fraseri 'Red Robin' earns its place through sheer colour. The young leaves emerge vivid red and hold that colour for several weeks before hardening to a deep, polished green, and because the display comes with each new flush, clipping in late spring gives you a second show in summer.

Choosing a form

A half standard carries the head on a shorter clear stem, which keeps the colour at eye level and suits smaller gardens and large containers. Pleached plants are trained flat onto a frame to screen above fence height — a livelier alternative to the sober evergreens usually used for the job.

Growing and care

Give Photinia a sheltered spot in sun or light shade and a soil that drains freely; it dislikes sitting wet over winter, which is the usual cause of leaf spot and dieback. Clip after the first flush has hardened to trigger fresh red growth, and keep pleached plants tied in to their frame as the new shoots extend.
