‘Hauszwetsche’ is the classic German damson-type plum, long grown across Europe for its dependability and its flavour in the kitchen. Grown here as a standard tree, it makes an attractive garden tree as well as a productive one.
The fruits are oval and deep purple-blue with a dusky bloom, ripening in late summer to early autumn. The flesh is firm, sweet and easily separated from the stone — outstanding for jam, baking and bottling, and excellent eaten fresh when fully ripe.
It flowers late, which helps it dodge spring frosts, and is self-fertile, so a single tree will crop without a pollination partner. Give it a sunny, sheltered position in fertile, well-drained soil.
