Most cherries give you a fortnight in spring. Prunus subhirtella ‘Autumnalis’, the winter flowering cherry, does something far more useful: it blooms through the winter months instead.
Semi-double white flowers appear intermittently from November right through to March, opening in mild spells and pausing in hard weather. The colouring is subtle rather than showy, and that is rather the point — it brings quiet cheer on the darkest days of the year, when nothing else in the garden is doing anything at all.
Before the flowers start, the autumn foliage turns orange-yellow, so the tree hands over from one season of interest to the next without a gap.
It was introduced in 1894 and won an Award of Merit in 1930, and it has stayed popular ever since for exactly the reason you would expect. Full sun, any aspect, and any soil that drains freely.
