Portuguese laurel needs little introduction as a hedge, but grown as a multi-stem tree it becomes something quite different: a sculptural, layered evergreen with a clear stem structure below and a dense canopy above. It gives you screening and privacy at head height without the bulk of a full hedge at ground level, which is exactly what you want where space is tight.
‘Angustifolia’ is the narrow-leaved form. It is neater and more compact than the straight species, so it holds a tidier outline — useful in a formal setting, and equally at home in an informal one.
Fragrant white flower spikes appear in early summer, followed by red fruits that ripen to black. The foliage is glossy, dense and evergreen, so the plant is doing its job twelve months a year.
It is famously adaptable: full sun or partial shade, any aspect, and any reasonable soil that drains freely. Low maintenance and extremely hardy.
