Salvia ‘East Friesland’ (Salvia nemorosa ‘Ostfriesland’) is a compact, upright perennial with aromatic green leaves and a long succession of deep violet-blue flower spikes.
It flowers from June right through to October — an exceptionally long season that keeps bees and butterflies busy and holds a border together. Cutting it back after the first flush encourages a second.
It looks its best woven through grasses such as Stipa tenuissima, and works equally well in gravel gardens, cottage borders, path edging and containers.
Grow in full sun in free-draining soil, with shelter from harsh wind and winter wet. Once established it is adaptable and copes well with drought.
