Salvia microphylla ‘Hot lips’ (Salvia jasmensis ‘Hot Lips) is commonly known as Sage ‘Hot Lips’ is an evergreen perennial with narrow leaves (this is what microphylla means) which can spread to 1 metre x 1 metre. They have eye catching terminal red and white flowers meaning they are found just off the stem, perfect for a splash of colour. The flowers are shaped similar to a bunch of cherries with red at the bottom and white at the top. Flowering between July and August and these should be pruned as they turn to prolong the flowering period. It is generally low maintenance plants, the only pruning except the flowers should really be to remove unwanted/unsightly stems.
Salvia microphylla ‘Hot lips’ (Salvia jasmensis ‘Hot Lips) prefers moist but well drained to well drained soils and should be positioned in a sunny, sheltered spot. Once established, these are fairly drought resistant. They also have a hardiness rating of H5, meaning they can survive temperatures down to between -15 to -10C.
