Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ (now classed as a Hylotelephium) is a tough, clump-forming perennial with fleshy grey-green leaves that look tidy from spring onwards. It is one of the easiest border plants to grow and earns its place for months of the year.
From late summer into autumn it sends up sturdy stems topped with broad, flat heads of tiny star-shaped flowers — opening soft pink and deepening to copper-red. Bees and butterflies work them constantly, and the faded seed-heads stand well through winter.
It asks for very little: give it full sun and free-draining soil and it is drought-tolerant once established, even in poorer ground. Ideal for borders, gravel gardens and containers.
