Trachelospermum jasminoides is one of the most useful climbers we sell, and one of the few that is genuinely evergreen. The leaves are small, dark green and glossy, and they often take on rich bronze, red and purple tones through the colder months, so the plant is doing something all year rather than sitting bare through winter.
Its flowers are small white pinwheels, carried in quantity from mid to late summer, and the scent is remarkable for the size of the bloom — sweet, carrying, and strongest on a warm evening. Plant it where that will be noticed: beside a door, over a seating area, or along a path.
It is self-twining and reaches somewhere between 3 and 5 metres, which makes it manageable on a trellis, a wall, a fence or a pergola. It can also be used as ground cover if you would rather let it run than climb.
Give it full sun to partial shade in a spot sheltered from cold, drying winds, and fertile soil that drains well — it will not tolerate sitting wet. It is reasonably hardy, to somewhere around −10°C, but in a colder or more exposed garden the shelter of a wall makes a real difference, and it also grows happily in a container that can be moved under cover for a hard winter. Maintenance is minimal: trim to shape in spring, once the risk of frost has passed.
