Stipa tenuissima is known by numerous names including: Mexican feather grass; Pony tail grass or Texas needle grass is a deciduous grass, growing up to 60cm native to the southern USA and Central America. It is excellent for pairing with most, if not any of our perennials, so please do check out our perennial page and is suitable for prairie planting. An alternative to this is Stipa arundinacea (Anemanthele lessoniana) as the industry is very short of these this year.

About Stipa tenuissima

Stipa tenuissima has a fountain like structure and is exceptionally low maintenance and easy to grow. It grows well in any free draining soil and prefers full sun but can survive will tolerate a little shade. It has an RHS hardiness rating of H4 meaning it can survive temperatures -10C to -5C.

Stipa tenuissima is useful in Architectural, city, court yard; cottage and informal gardens and low maintenance gardens and flower borders and beds.

When cutting it back it is often best to wait until spring as the old foliage offers protection.

It is generally disease and pest free.
