Pleached Lime is the classic avenue tree — clean, straight stems topped with flat, formally trained heads.

Pleached lime (Tilia × europaea) is the traditional choice for a formal avenue or a screened boundary, and nothing else looks quite as architectural. Clear straight stems carry flat, square heads trained onto a frame.
Planted in a row, the heads knit together into a continuous raised hedge that screens neighbouring windows while leaving the ground beneath open and usable. In summer the small, fragrant flowers are alive with bees; the leaves turn soft yellow before falling.
Lime is vigorous, hardy and very tolerant of hard pruning — which is exactly why it has been used for pleaching for centuries. It will need clipping once or twice a year to keep the outline crisp.
