Liriodendron tulipifera is a magnificent large tree with leaves unlike anything else in the garden — squared off at the tip as though the end has been neatly cut away. They turn a clear butter-yellow in autumn.
Mature specimens produce curious tulip-shaped flowers in early summer, greenish-yellow with an orange band at the base. They are often high in the canopy, so worth looking up for.
It grows quickly and ultimately makes a very large tree, so it needs real space — this is one for a big lawn, parkland or a large garden rather than a small plot. Give it deep, moist, well-drained soil in full sun.
